- About Multiple Postings:
-
- I have just finished compiling the AppleLinks for the last 2 months.
-
- I have noticed some things that may be of benefit to some here on MACAPP.TECH$
- There were many repetitions of links, this is obvious to all.
-
- The reason has repeatedly been shown to be AppleLink's improper handling of
- group addresses. It tries to send to everyone on the list individually and
- this often takes a great deal of time. The AppleLink application itself gets
- no response back from the AppleLink network and assumes that there has been a
- transmission problem. The net result of this is that links get sent to some on
- the MACAPP.TECH$ address but not all, and AppleLink marks this as never having
- been sent to anyone (since it does not really understand groups).
-
- Most of us have worked around this. I personally rarely encounter a problem
- sending no matter what time of the day I send any messages. This may be
- because my particular network access point is less busy. When I do encounter a
- problem I quickly open my out basket and remove the item I sent. This removes
- it from that portion of the MACAPP.TECH$ list that already received it, so when
- I send it again there are no problems.
-
- Kurt Schmucker has used another method that works better for busier access
- points. He sends his messages at times when the network is not so busy (at
- night).
-
- This works for most people, though something should be done at the host end to
- fix this problem.
-
- There have been a lot of repeats lately that are related to another issue. 95%
- of the repeats I found were from 3 indivuals. These individuals all are using
- the QuickMail gateway to access AppleLink. I am assuming that they have things
- set up so that QuickMail checks in with AppleLink on a regular basis and that
- it keeps sending the messages until it gets a complete send. Thus the senders
- are not getting the same feedback as those of us who send using AppleLink 5.0
-
- Perhaps something can be done to make the AppleLink gateway more intelligently
- handle this type of problem. I suspect that the gateway needs to have a longer
- timeout interval.
-
- I also suspect that something could be done with the AppleLink application to
- allow a longer period of no response. Can we get this in the form of a patch?
